Discovering Zenith

Back in the 80’s my good friend James Good introduced me to a game that was to occupy far too many of my teenage evenings. One reason I spent so much time playing it was that the game ran pretty slowly on the Commodore 64 the other was that it was one of those games that manages to create a strong atmosphere that draws your in to it’s alternative reality. Of course, the fact that it had 10,000 levels to work through also helped!
Sentinel was originally written by Geoff Crammond of REVS and Grand Prix fame and was totally different from everything else around at the time. Sentinel was one of the first “virtual reality” style games.
Oldschool Gaming Reviews

I’ve recently had some fun trying my hand at writing some reviews for Oldschool Gaming. In this months update you’ll find my review of the Spectrum game Big Baps and a conversion of Frogger “ for the VIC20 along with other reviews for Dynablaster, Joe Gunn, Pamela the Zombie Hunter and IO – The Remake.
Writing these and other reviews has made me play games that perhaps I wouldn’t have done without such a reason to do so and I’ve found it surprisingly enjoyable.
Spaceships need joysticks

It was my desire to relive those good old days that drove my desire to try and find a space combat simulation that would replace Elite (if there could ever be such a thing!). I had strange urges to re-experience the kind of excitement you only get when you’re battling Thargoids!
This search led me to X3 Reunion which looked fantastic in the screen-shots and the reviews seemed to suggest it was just the kind of thing I was after.

Many years ago 1, as a teenager, I spent many days sat infront of my Amiga looking at what was little more than a blank screen – and I was enthralled.
This was the joy of playing X-COM:Enemy Unknown.
Gaming for the over 30's

I always considered myself a fairly reasonable gamer. Hell, I grew up with the Commodore 64 back in the days when there were no walk-throughs (although we did have our handy action-replay cartridges and there were all those POKEs from the back of the computer mags!). Aliens were tough back then though. Aliens were real-aliens! When you’d wiped-em out once, they got meaner and you had to do it all over again. None of these namby-pamby cut-scenes, just hardcore xenophobic blasting! Hell, sometimes there wasn’t even a plot! The only thing you needed to know when playing these games were where the fire-button was!
The truth is, i don’t get much time to play games any more these days. Work and family life mean that I tend to dip in and out as time allows. Just when I’m getting into a game I’ll stop and not touch it for a month or two and then I’ll be back to the start again. Despite this, I’ve finished Neverwinter Nights, Half-Life 2, nearly finished Doom 3 and not doing too badly with Tomb Rraider Legend, although I’m not going to admit how long it’s taken me.
